4th Annual Charity Golf Outing

The Cure for Kyle Charity Golf Outing hosted by Menninger & Associates saw 84 golfers competing at the outing’s dedicated course, Brookside Country Club, in Pottstown, PA. The conditions were perfect with the golfers teeing off in a scramble format. The course had plenty of mini games for golfers to enjoy including: Beat the Host, “Blind” Tee Shot, a Hole-In-One Challenge for a car that was donated by Patriot Chevrolet of Limerick, and Longest Drive. Plus, with the outing’s signature Putting contest occurring on the tricky 9th hole, two qualifiers sunk the difficult 30-foot downhill putt, forcing a putt-off for the trophy. Both the Putting champ and Beat the Host winner opted to graciously donate their 50/50 winnings. The picturesque day was captured by local photographer and bronze sponsor, Silver Orchid Photography.

Along with a delicious brunch spread, Mike Sloane and his team at Brookside provided a five-star prime rib dinner for the exhausted golfers before host Michael Menninger raffled off the gift baskets and other donations as well as recognize the trophy recipients of the event.

Over the first three years, this outing received an average of $11,000 raised per year. This year was different. With a record 39 local business sponsors (31 being premier sponsors), the outing raised over $21,000! Premier sponsors included:  OPT 4 Group, John Hancock Investments, PIMCO Funds, Principal Asset Management, Haverford Trust, Guggenheim, Patriot Chevrolet, Prudential, Hallam Engineering & Construction, Invesco, Unruh Turner Burke & Frees, Franklin Templeton, J.P. Morgan, T. Rowe Price, Upper Providence Living, Silver Orchid Photography, Bald Birds Brewing, Open Tier Systems, J.M. Background

In November 2021, a local family (the Sheahan’s) received a devastating diagnosis of Stage 4 non‑smoking, non-small cell, lung cancer for their son, Kyle. A genomic test revealed that he has a gene mutation called RET, which causes cancer cells to grow at a very fast pace. Fortunately, there was a drug FDA approved in 2020 to treat this mutation. Kyle started this drug and had great results with scans showing significant improvement in just 6 months. Truly, a miracle.

Unfortunately, he regressed and had to receive a few rounds of radiation followed by chemo in October 2022. The good news was the med/chemo mix was working, the bad news was the side effects were miserable. This is their reality until a new treatment is found. They need a Plan C (or even D) and research is the key to new treatment.

The challenge for Kyle’s cancer is that research on lung cancer, despite being the #1 cancer killer (more deadly than colon, breast & prostate cancers combined), is massively underfunded. This is thought to be due to the stigma associated with smoking. The majority of RET+ lung cancer is found in people who have never smoked. RET-driven lung cancer is ~2% of all lung cancer, so most funding is allocated to the more common subtypes. RET is still the new kid on the block, and therefore, research needs to catch up to other well-known cancer types. For these reasons, those living with RET+ lung cancer need to take matters into their own hands. For more information on RET+ visit their website at www.retpositive.org.
